Like many of the unexplored coastlines of the world, Papua New Guinea boasts surf breaks that offer the chance to ride where few have ridden before, and the word 'crowded' doesn’t exist.
The immediate breaks around Kavieng offer waves for the competent to the intermediate surfer. The most well known is Piccaninny Point, a right-hander in close proximity to Kavieng town. Several other left and righthand breaks are within a short dinghy ride of the harbour.
The following 6 surfing breaks are within the Kavieng surf management plan :
Outside Kavieng you have the choice of travelling either east or west. East takes you to the reef and islands of New Ireland Province. West takes you across the top of New Hanover, where there’s the potential for perfect breaks; it just depends on which way the swell is coming from. All the islands and reefs boast both lefts and rights.
The breaks suit the average to pro surfer; there's plenty here to get the adrenaline pumping. All the breaks are onto a reef so wet suit boots are a must, as many a wave will leave you standing on the reef.
A surfari expedition throughout the islands and along the north coast of New Hanover offers surfers the chance to truly discover new terrain.
